Final Draft Newspaper Front Cover
I have now near enough completed my newspaper front cover as I have completed what I set out to do for this week. I have made all my adverts and put them onto my front cover, I have got the main image, the masthead is done and I have also written 2 stories for the front cover. These are the main story about the local couple who have won the lottery and also the small sports story that I have featured on my front cover. All I will have to do now is make a few tweaks to get my front cover just right and also to start thinking about the first page of my newspaper as well.
Final Front Cover Advert
I have now completed all the advertisements that will feature on my newspaper front cover, my third advert is for aimed at new drivers as it is advertising a call line for new drivers who are unsure about how to get started or may not be able to afford it. Overall I feel that my adverts look like they are for a local newspaper and fit in with the rest of my paper well.

Another Draft of Newspaper
This is my second draft of my local newspaper where I have added more to the front cover. First of all I have completed another advertisement to my newspaper, all I need now is one more to add to the cover. I have also written a small sports story which is placed next to the new advert. All that I need to do now is design one more advert and write the main story for my front cover.
My 2nd Advert
I have made a second advert for the front cover of my newspaper which is advertising a competition which is to win a 5 day family holiday. On the advertisement it says that the details are inside the paper which would make buyers, especially families, to want to read the paper and maybe have a go at the competition.
This advertisement will be placed underneath the masthead and next to the sports story on the front of my newspaper. By looking at other local newspapers, most notably 'The News', I seen that adverts of the same genre as mine are usually put around about this part of the newspaper.

1st draft of Newspaper Front Cover
I am currently creating my newspaper front cover, here is my 1st draft on my newspaper front cover where I have added an image and completed the masthead.
I now need to create more advertisements for my front cover (I have currently done one) and to start writing my articles for the main story, with headline, and small sports story which I will feature briefly on my front cover.
Newspaper Adverts
Today I have been thinking about advertisements that are going to feature on my newspaper, on the front cover and on the first page. This website has given me inspiration for creating my adverts as they feature many different styles of adverts and different places, companies that are being advertised. I have created one advert today, which is promoting a local plumbing company that will feature on the newspaper front cover. I used photoshop to create the adverts and used a mixture of text and images to make the advert look more realistic.

Newspaper Images
I have now got my images for my newspaper front cover and the newspaper first page. I have taken images of a local community centre for my first page story and I have also taken pictures of a local couple, my parents, who have "won" the lottery. Here are my images that I have taken:
Newspaper Photos: Front Page & First Page
View more presentations from HTA2Media.
I will now choose from this selection of images which ones I will use for my newspaper to represent the front cover story and first page story.
I also have a stream of all my images on Flickr so my images can get a wider audience feedback to help me choose what images to use.

Font For Newspaper Masthead
The font that I have chosen for the masthead of my newspaper is called 'Lion King' and I think that it is a suitable font for my newspaper. I have screen grabbed an image of the font with the title of my newspaper, 'Portsmouth Post', with black which I might use for my final masthead. The other colours I was thinking of using were blue or yellow as these are colours traditionally associated with Portsmouth. I may however keep the masthead black but I have not made a final decision yet.

Mock Up Of My Newspaper
Today I started to create a mock up of what I would like my newspaper to look like on InDesign, this will help me create the overall layout for my newspaper when I properly start to create it. In my mock up I have placed where I want the main image, main headline, masthead, article and the advertisements. My layout is quite similar to other local newspapers that I have viewed, as this is my 1st mock up I will over the weeks change this layout when I start to properly design it to make it more original. I have also tried to think of the colours that I am going to use for my masthead, I have thought about using blue and yellow as they are two colours that are symbolic of Portsmouth and as my paper is called, 'Portsmouth Post' I feel that these two colours would be appropriate.
Newspaper Stories About Community Centre's
Usually stories about community centre's are featured in local newspapers talking about them in a positive and negative way. In positive stories, usually the stories focus more on the people who work there or volunteer. In negative stories, the actual community centre is the focus of the story but it usually talks about it being vandalized or broken into. When looking at th
ese types of stories in national and local newspapers they are documented in different ways.
One of these stories in written in a positive light and the other takes a more negative approach. The story in the local newspaper is the more negative story talking about a robbery in a community centre, the article itself isn't very long and features a brief interview with the manager of the centre. Also there is no image featured with the article which may suggest that the manager of the centre did not want anything to be photographed. This kind of story in common in local newspaper as community centre's tend to be at the heart of the area which means when something happens to the centre, it will make big news in local newspapers.
On the other hand the story in The Sun, a well known national newspaper, features a positive story focused on a community centre. The story is about British boxer Amir Khan opening a community centre in his local area. There is a long article which also features an interview with Amir about the centre and other topics that it involves. This article shows a much more positive side than the local newspaper as in the national story it is based on a well known British boxer who will help to sell the story to the readers. As people will see his name and face which will make them want to read the story as they are probably more interested in w
ho is opening the community centre than the actual centre itself. Unlike the local article this story has images to back it up, these images all near enough have Amir in them which highlights the fact that he is the main focus for this story.
New Ideas
Over the past week I have decided to change up my idea for the article on the first page of the newspaper. Initially I was going write an article on a local community centre being vandalized or broken into, I have now decided to base the story on the community centre being closed down. I came to this decision as the community centre that I am going to photograph has actually shut down so I thought that this story would be more fitting. The story will still have a negative angle to it and will contrast to the story on the front cover, I also will keep the aspect of youth crime mentioning in my article that the community centre has been vandalized in the past so some of my original ideas will still be used in this article.

How Newspapers Write About Lottery Stories
As my front page story is going to be about local lottery winners I am looking at how other newspapers have reported on this type of story. I will be looking at how national newspapers and local newspapers report on lottery winners.
The two different stories both report on lottery winners, the main difference between the two stories is that the local story, from The Bath Chronicle, has written more about the story and even has an interview with the winners. The Guardian story is a shorter article and gives an outline of what has happened to the winning couple and also gives lottery statistics. Both articles have included an image, in The Guardian the image shows the winning couple opening a champagne bottle in celebration and in The Bath Chronicle the image is not of the winning couple but of the Euro millions lottery ticket. This shows that the couple written about in the local newspaper did not want to be photographed whereas the couple in the national paper clearly did want to be featured in the paper.
My Newspaper Ideas
Over half term I have thought about what I am going to include in my local newspaper, I have come up with a story for my front page where I am going to write about a local couple who have won the lottery. For this story I am going to take photos of a couple or person holding a lottery ticket and with the story I was thinking about adding something extra to the story by adding suspense for the reader. I have also thought about what I am going to write in the first page of the newspaper where I am going to write about a story with a negative angle. This story is going to be about a local community centre which has either been vandalized or broken into by youths. As crime by young people is written about a lot in the news, especially local news, I thought this would be a newsworthy story. I have also thought about the different advertisements that will be included in my newspaper on the front cover and first page. I will be creating adverts for local businesses and special offers, for example '2 for 1' offers aimed at families.

Production Meeting
Today I had a mini production meeting with my lecturer about my ideas for my local newspaper, we talked about the different ideas for my paper. The first idea that was mentioned was the style of the newspaper, I have decided to go for a traditional looking newspaper similar to 'The News'. I have chosen to do a traditional looking paper because I feel that they look better and would appeal to those who buy local newspapers. The next decision that I made was the name of my newspaper which is going to be 'Portsmouth Post', this name sums up what my newspaper is all about as I will be writing about the area of Portsmouth and 'Post' is commonly used in names of local newspapers. I have thought about the article that I used for my front page, my idea was to write about a local family who win the lottery, this is a positive story and for the second article on the first page of the paper I am going to write a negative story. Also the rest of the paper was talked about with the adverts, sport story and weather which will all feature in my newspaper on the front page and the first page. I will now begin to put together my ideas and start to create my local newspaper.

The News, Saturday 11th September 2010
In Saturday's edition, and the final edition of the week, of The News there were 83 pictures included in the newspaper. This was the lowest amount of images that has been put into an issue of The News this week, this may be the case because it's the last paper of the week or they just had more the other types of content for this day's newspaper. All the week the layout of each issue of The News has stayed pretty similar which means that they are keeping to a certain theme which obviously appeals to the local audience who this newspaper is aimed at. The main headline is bold with black font and reads. 'TRIPLE TRAGEDY MADE ME A SHOPAHOLIC'. This headline uses emotive language with words like 'Tragedy' to make the audience be symphatic towards the person who the article is talking about. It also ends of the week by giving the reader something to think about before the next edition is out on the next Monday. The back headline is in bold, black font and reads, ' 'JOKER' CAN GIVE US THE EDGE'. This is the first time this week that the colour of the back headline wasn't the same as the colour of the font on the main headline which uses white font. This may be because again this the last paper of the week or it may just be a design choice. This headline is talking about a football player who plays for Portsmouth FC, this particular player has been featured in previous editions this week so the reader will be following his story and progress while he is playing for Portsmouth FC. There is also other stories featured on the back of the paper which gives the reader other stories to follow along with the main story that is being featured.
The News, Friday 10th September 2010
In Friday's edition of The News there were 93 pictures used in the newspaper, this the 3rd highest amount of images used in the paper so far this week. This again shows that this newspaper are still trying to keep a consistant amount of images in the paper within the week when they are distributed to the reader. From looking at all this week's previous edition's of The News it is clear to see that they have tried to keep a similar layout each day to give the reader some form of familarity when they pick and read this newspaper. The main headline in Friday's issue does not follow the font colour pattern as, like yesterday, there is bold black font which reads '1,400 JOBS COULD GO UNDER MAJOR POLICE SHAKE UP'. This is an unconventional headline as it is quite long but does offer up something different for the reader. There is also another smaller headline above with an image that portrays a much more positive message to those who read this newspaper. The back headline which also uses bold black font and reads, 'KITSON: I CAN FIRE POMPEY UP TABLE'. This is another quote from a footballer who plays for Portsmouth FC, which would get the readers who also follow the team interested. It is also portraying a positive message and uses language that can be easily remembered, as they miss out the word 'the' to make the headline more readable.

The News, Thursday 9th September 2010
In Thursday's edition of The News, there were 85 pictures included in the newspaper. This is the lowest amount of pictures included in The News so far this week but is still a high number and close to the other amounts of images in the newspaper, this shows that are still trying to keep a consistant amount of pictures in the paper to it flowing consistantly. Once this issue keeps with the similar layout that has been used throughout the week with the way that the text, images and coverline have put layed out. The main headline is in bold, black font and reads 'FIGHT STARTS TO SAVE THE MARINES'. This headline is appealing to the local audience as it is referring to the history of the city which people who come from Portsmouth take a lot of pride in. There is also a theme going on as Tuesday's headline was in black font, so far they have had a pattern of white font, black font, white font, black font. There is also another smaller headline with image above which is relating to the same story as the main headline. The back healdine is also in bold, black font, like Tuesday's edition, and reads 'CIFTCI: KEEP ME IN THE SPOTLIGHT'. This is a quote from a footballer who plays for Portsmouth FC, who is the newsapaper's local team. This would appeal to the reader as they would be interested in this particular player and football team as they are more than likley going to support them because they are from the area.

The News, Wednesday 8th September 2010
In Wednesday's edition of The News there were 97 pictures this is the highest amount of pictures that the newspaper has featured so far this week, 9 more than yesterday and 3 more than Monday, This shows that they are trying to keep a consistant amount of images in each issue so the reader feels like they are getting their money's worth with this particular newspaper. The layout is very simiular to the previous two edition that have been released this week as local newspapers and newspapers in general tend to keep to the same layout as it gives the reader some form of familarity when purchasing this or any other newspaper. The main headline on this edition is referring back to the main headline and story in Monday's edition about an unwell child and the headline reads 'THANK YOU'. This was in bold, white font, like on Monday's paper aagin, and was done becasue people like to follow a story so by writing about the progress in the story the reader feels like they are going on a journey with the people in the article. There is also another headline about the sport just above the main headline, which would make people turn to the back of the paper. The back headline is also carrying on from a previous story but from yesterday's paper and the headline reads, 'LIAM WILL JOIN THE BLUES ON LOAN'. This headline again is bold, white font to follow today's font themes and is a story that will still be fresh in readers minds from yesterday.

The News, Tuesday 7th September 2010
In Tuesday's edition of The News there are 88 pictures within the newspaper, 6 less than in yesterday's paper. These pictures again are mostly in colour which shows that are trying to keep the images in the same style throughout the week to make the reader feel like they are following something properly. They are again of variety of sizes depending on the story they backing up. The headlines on this edition are both in big, bold, black font to catch the eye of readers who pass by to want to pick up the newspaper. The main headline on the front cover read, 'PUPILS LET DOWN BY ''COMPLETE INCOMPETENCE''. This headline uses two words next to each other that have a similar sound to them so people will want to know more about the topic. Also this headline does not match the main image on the paper as that is for another article in the newspaper. The back headline for the sport reads, 'LAWERENCE LIMBO', this uses aliteration to engage the reader as both words begin with 'L' and like the front this headline does not match with the main image above. This shows that this newspaper likes to keep to the same theme in each issue.
The News, Monday 6th September 2010
In Mondays edition of The News there 94 pictures in the newspaper. This shows that they aim to add a great vareity of images to go with the words that have been written in the paper. There was a good mix of small and large pictures, which were dependent on the article that the image was supporting. The images were bigger for the main headline and the main sports headlines. Also nearly all of the pictures were in colour to show that this newspaper is modern and can be accessed by various selection of people. There are two main headlines on this edition of The News, the first is on the front and reads 'YOU COULD CHANGE OUR JASMINE'S LIFE'. This is a quote from the story releating to this headline and is about a real life story. This appeals to a local audience as the readers may know the person who is being talked about and it will make them think which the newspaper aims to achieve. The text is also in white font as the picture it is placed on has a black background, so the headline can be seen. The other headline is on the back and is for the sport section of the newspaper and it reads, 'SPIRIT OF BLUES IS STILL STRONG'. This is talking about the local football team for this newspaper which is Portsmouth Football Club. This headline again is in white font, like the front headline, and uses some aliteration which words beginning with the letter 's' to make sure the headline is fully understood and memorised by the reader of this newspaper.

What Is The "Inverted Triangle"?
The Inverted Triangle or Pyramid is a metaphor used by journalists and writers to illustrate the most important information first on a text, this is the most widely used method of writing a news story.
The format is valued because readers can leave the story at any point and understand it, even if they don't have all the details. It also allows less important information at the end to be more easily removed by editors so the article can fit a fixed size.
Other styles are also used in news writing, including the anecdotal lead, which begins the story with an eye catching tale or anecdote rather than the central facts and the Q&A, or question-and-answer format. This form of writing is also sometimes referenced when refering to the notion of 'Bottom Line Up Front'.
What Is Ethos? How Might This Be Expressed In The Newspaper's Language?
Ethos is a greek word originally meaning 'accustomed place' and the distinctive spirit of a culture or era. The term also comes from Aristotle meaning the perceived character of the speaker. The term Ethos also means the appeal to the audience ethics, knowing right from wrong. This may be expressed in the newspaper's language by using 'Ethos' terms to describe the ethics of a story and express different emotions from the stories that are being produced.
What Is Human Interest?
Human Interest is a feature story which that discusses people in an emotional of interactive way which creates interest or sympathy to the reader of the story. Human interest stories sometimes are 'the story behind the story' about a certain event, organization or historical happening such as the story of an individual's life or a profile of someone's known career achievement. Human interest stories are sometimes criticized as 'soft' news, or manipulative programming. However, they do still sell well as by effecting people's emotions and making them want to read the story which means that they will buy the newspaper.

A local newspaper is a news publication that is produced and distributed within a 'local' area regarding news that is occuring in the local area. They are produced in different areas of a town or city to give the area a sense of community by reporting on events that are happening in their local area.
Local newspapers are also supported by a website that can be accessed by any one who is interested in the local news of a particular area in the UK. This helps the local news become more modern which can appeal to different age ranges who may want to by the newspaper.
The different areas that a local newspaper usually covers is local news, sport, politics, culture, events and also takes interest in national news as well which includes showbiz and politics. What Is Newswothiness?
Being 'Newsworthy' means something being of a sufficent quality to be reported in news bulletins or newspapers etc. It means that a story has to have soemthing interesting about it to make the person who is reading/watching the news to stop and think about the story and aslo create a reaction or response to it. There are 5 areas which make a story newsworthy they are:
- Timing
- Significance
- Proximity
- Prominence
- Human Interest
When an editor needs to decide whether to run with a particular story, he or she will ask how well the story meets each of these criteria. Normally, a story should perform well in at least two areas to make a story newsworthy for the public to consume.
